say what you will about simon, but he's laughing all the way to the bank. seriously, he sits behind a desk for a couple days in each city, says what he thinks, and gets MILLIONS.

it's a hit because of all the extras they show. If they really wanted to, they could find the next most talented singer in 2 weeks... without all the fluff.

What kinda fluff would you show with a band ? It'd be pretty dull... too straightforward... doesn't belong on primetime network tv.

They sell more than you might think. Point is that if it was a flop the show wouln'td be on.

In reguards to the OP. I think its a great idea. I'm sure it will be or has been done. I remember a show on MTV where 4 bands competed against each other. It was sort of like this idea, but not quite.

the show's a hit. i'm pretty sure it's one of the the top rated show on tv. there's a reason they are on season 4 (or 3, i'm not sure).

afaik, the original american idol winner, Kelly Clarkston, is still selling albums.

They've already tried the group approach at least a couple times, PopStars I think it was called and Making the Band come to mind. American Idol is a top 5 show, Kelly Clarkson is currently at #6 (after 8 wks) on the Billboard Hot 100 Album chart, 2 songs in the top 50. Noticed Fantasia (sp.?) (season 3) on there too.

I'd agree with the post about not encouraging more reality shows.
