Would the salaries of these people rise? I think this is something I read in econ class. The book said that if the pay of pizza delivery boys, waiters, etc would suddenly reduce due to no tipping, their pay would be increased since they'd look for other jobs with higher pay. And if people would start tipping more, the pay would be driven down since more folks would want to become waiters and pizza delivery boys. So it seems that salary depends on the amount of tips. Now,you hear stories about people who tip and those who don't, but I would think that only the total amount of tips is relevant.

So if this is true, those who don't tip and those who do are both considered together and it shoudln't matter too much if one person tips and another doesn't. Well of course not being tipped is insulting and you will have less money in your pocket, but on a larger scale its not a big deal.

that may or may not be true....but the *problem* is that such a reaction would take an interminable amount of time to propagate through delivery boys salaries...and they'd be quite angry in the meantime....

to be honest, comparing with Europe, US has the BEST service even with it is bad.

When I was in Ireland. I had the worst service ever....turns out it's the same all over Europe.

When I was in college not too long ago this was the usual conversation with pizza delivery guys

me: hi, how much is it.

delivery guy: 12 dollars (normal price for 2 topping large pizza and bottle of drink)

me: (hand him a 20 dollar bill)

delivery guy: "How much do you want back"

That last line pissed me off every single time. What the hell do you mean by "How much do you want back??? I want the change back and then I will decide what I want to give you for tip. Did he really expect me to say "Oh don't worry keep the change?" Did he really expect a 8.00 dollar tip for 12.00 order??

Just thought I would throw that in this thread last pizza delivery thread got chopped prematurely.

When I was in Italy, tipping was not expected. Of course, I was only in the northern Italy (Pavia, Milan...) I don't know if it's the same in the south.

yes, their salaries would have to rise. if their hourly wage, including tips, doesnt exceed minimum wage, then the company must reimberse (sp?) them the difference

You missed a part of the equation. If everyone stopped tipping, and salaries went up, so would prices. Then we could all bitch and moan about how much it costs to go out to eat.

Yeah, but you wouldn't be spending more money since what the tips are sort of being put into the salary. What's lost at the table would become part of the paycheck. Only those that don't tip would complain. Frankly, I'd prefer this system because I wouldn't have to deal with figuring out how much to tip.

Or you could use common sense and tell the delivery driver you want X.XX back when you hand him the $20 instead of whining about it

Sounds like you're looking for an excuse not to tip. If you can afford the pizza (luxury convenience food) you can afford to tip the person bringing it to you.
