I don't mean to start any flame wars or anything, but I think this would be interesting to hear about, so lets begin.

Nothing? I don't recall religions outlawing the existence of other intelligent life.

If "aliens" aren't necessarily beings from other planets, but any creatures or beings that are of non-earth origin, then a lot of religions already believe that. Angels and demons, for instance, could be considered by a broad definition to be "extraterrestrial" as they aren't from earth, but are on a different plane of existence (the spiritual world) unobservable to beings in the physical world.

hopefully they won't view us as inferior creatures and then slaughter us for food.

I heard an astronomer from the Vatican say on Coast to Coast that if we were to find/meet life from another planet, it would only further confirm the church's belief in God.

People have a tendency to reshape and re-interperet God's word to fit in nicely with the change in times and their current lives. If aliens did land on Earth we would probably find some obscure way to skew God's word in the Bible again to account for it.

I think people are pretty naive to think there isn't any other form of life out there besides us, especially considering how vast the universe is.

Based on the above responses all I can say is:

All praise our god - Gumby.

C.S. Lewis covered this in Perelandra. His take was that Jesus died to save everybody, even the aliens. Of course, Lewis was more than a bit weird where religion was concerned.

Well, Muslims would tell you, "It's there on the first page of the Quran"

001.002
YUSUFALI: Praise be to Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the worlds;
PICKTHAL: Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds,
SHAKIR: All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds.

rationally, the existence of aliens would probably clue believers into the fact their religion cant explain everything
on the other hand, if belivers were rational religion wouldnt exist in the first place
soooo, probably nothing changes

also, no religion threads for postcount < 5000

Haha, I have well over 7000 posts, but my other account got banned. I talked to one of the admins a while back about how unfair the ban was, so he let me keep my new account. :)

It would mean we'd have to start a war with and kill all the aliens to protect our beliefs and way of life of course...

After all, we couldn't allow reality to interfere with our perception of it now could we?
