If a site accepts credit cards and has a certificate..does that make them safe?

I mean, you can't own a site and deal with credit cards and be a scam site can you? Especially if this site's been around for many months?

Yes as a matter of fact.

And if you can run a site that accepts credit cards and takes money from people and be online for months..please tell me how that works. I might look into such a thing.

There is always a risk when using your credit card, over the Internet or not. Your protection would be from your own CC company more than the longevity of a particular site, I'd think.

The certificate only guarantees that the data is encrypted "secure" when it is sent. It doesn't guarantee that the company is honest.

Anybody can setup a secure site as just about every host offers that as part of the package. And, there are plenty of fly-by-night merchant services providers out there that setup accounts without paying too much attention to the background of the vendor and principals.

As someone who worked for an online store when this craziness first started 4 years ago:
SSL only makes sure noone is reading your digits till they get to the company server. But, the employee of the company, who probably is just some IT guy off the street, can see all the info in the database. For all he cares, he could just print out all the credit card numbers, and order stuff online for himself.
