should the police officer be charged with a crime?

Example:

*car accident
*victim is trapped inside the car
*car catches on fire
*police officer cannot get the victim out of the car
*police officer is watching the victim slowly burn to death
*police officer shoots victim in the head

he could be. even murder for the sake of humanity is murder.

I wouldn't say he should necessarily, but I don't think you will find many cops that would do such a thing.

Yes, he should. What if the fire department came around the corner 2 seconds later?

Speaking for myself only, I would rather be shot in the head than live with massive burns all over my body.

Given today's legal climate, you can bet your ass he'd be sued, regardless or whether or not he'd be charged criminally.

I would sit there and watch the man burn. In fact, I may even break out the marshmallows.

And speaking based on my own beleifs, I think you should be able to make that decision. After the fire department rescues you, you can decide you're burned too badly and you'd rather take your own life. I don't beleive that any police officer has the right to make that decision for you.

the instance he is talking about though, the truck driver was asking begging the police officer to shoot him.

No. He should be commended for having the courage to put them out of their misery.

Exactly, he is showing mercy for the person who is burning to death in the car.

It's still illegal. We don't allow assisted sucides in the country (except in Oregon). It's murder no matter how you look at it.

I'd want the cop to shoot me and If I was the cop I'd shoot you, but then again I dont have emotions and my morals went with them.

If the person would be dead for sure or he/she would not want to continue living, then no. But the problem of course is the officer can't really know for sure..

I wouldn't want to be shot, I'd want to atleast live for a day or two to say goodbye and go to confession. Don't policeman have fireextingushers (sp?) in their cars???

I worked with a guy who goes camping via 4x4 and logging roads type thing. Anyways, on this one trip he saw a pickup parked on the side of the road that looked pretty run down, but just ignored it. After a few days in the bush he passed it again on the way back and thought it was strange that a truck sat there for a few days. Stopped, looked in, found a dead body that had been burned like some kind of mob hit. Called it in and stuff. Weird.

How about this one?

A apartment has caught fire. Victim is stuck on the 4th floor of burning building with no way out. Officer grabs large sheet of cloth and has several onlookers hold on to the ends and then tells victim to jump. Victim does so and dies. Should he be charged for murder?
