If a parallel species of sentient beings(non humans) lived on Earth.

Let's say there is a parallel non human species of beings who are just as intelligent as us and just as capable on Earth. These beings are just as native to Earth as we are and we share no intermating capability (so no interspecies crossbreeding is possible)

Would it have resulted in perpetual war between humans and them?

Would it have resulted in greater unity amongst humans since we would have an external enemy to fight with instead of amongst themselves?

Or somehow would we have found a way to coexist in peace?

It depends...

would they manage to be attractive - as in Star Trek style? or would they be disgusting piles of goo that we cannot communicate with? If goo, I'd say exterminate it.

It is a very new idea to view people of different races as equal and not to enslave them, kill them, etc. I would think another sentient being would be treated like we treated the blacks and native Americans.

1. It matters not that there is no crossbreeding, there will be interspecies porn and it will be plentiful.

2. At first there would be peace ( so we could exploit them technologically ) and then there would be a war until we completely eliminate them ( we would never allow them to be more powerful than us ).

3. Sure there will be human harmony, for a little while after the war - but then we will have to go back to exploiting each other.

It's only natural that we would have to kill them all and then fight amongst ourselves over the winnings.

If there first words to us were: "All your base are belong to us" then I say we drop the bomb on their asses.

I'm going to refer to the Neanderthal, and point out his extinction at either the hands of Homo Sapien Sapien, or evolution itself. So I'm going to say it'd take no time at all and the loser would become extinct.

It would be a giantgantic war, lasting until one of the human country's kill the rest of us or until we kill them all or they kick our a$$es.

Generally, if you have two species competing for the same resources, you have war.

Unquestionably we would have warred with them. We slaughter each other en mass over such petty things as skin colour, or even pettier things such as where a person was born. To have another, VERY different species for us to blame our problems on is just too simple a solution.

The formation of greater interhuman harmony is harder to say. There'd definitely be more solidarity, but I think that'd last only until we wiped out the other species as you know we'd try to. ("I may be black, and you may be white, but it has a tail. Fvck it, brother, let's kill it.")

Fixed. :p

Who knows, maybe being forced to live with another reasonably intelligent species would change the evolutionary paths of both, and cause each species to be less aggressive and prone to warfare. Not likely, but I can always hope.

It depends on whether or not we're competing for the same resources. If they ate rocks and drank saltwater I'm sure we'd get along just fine. But if they also needed arable land and so on war would probably be inevitable.

It would only galvanize humans for the brief period it takes to fight them, then its every man for himself

Sad, but true.

Either that, or one species would develop a technological edge and enslave the other.

What if they are pretty, but with no possibility of interspecial breeding?

I think there would have been a war at some point, but all things being equal, it would eventually lead to peace between the species.

and what if they liked to consume us....there would never be peace until one species is wiped out.
