If a monitor has DVI and a laptop has HDMI, should a DVI -> HDMI adapter + HDMI lead work?

I have an adapter that I've never used which has a female DVI dual-link connector on one end and a HDMI plug on the other end. If I plugged that into the monitor and use a HDMI lead to plug into that and back to the laptop, should I be able to use the monitor as a second screen for the laptop?

Having a look at an image of a HDMI lead, I suspect I might need a HDMI lead that has a HDMI socket at one end, as the HDMI end of this adapter looks like the end of a normal HDMI lead.

Still plausible?

I just realised it would make more sense to use a DVI cable and plug this adapter on the end of it and the laptop.

Yes, it will work. You won't be able to get the extreme bandwidth of modern HDMI (no 4K for you), and you won't get audio, but you'll be able to drive the display at its native resolution.

They are signal compatible, if you can get the cable genders sorted out it should be fine.

[EDIT]To clarify you will be able to drive at native resolution if it's a single link display. If you have a 2560x1440/1600 or something higher than 1920x1200 you'll need an active HDMI 2.0 to dual-link adapter which will run you about $30 these days.[/EDIT]

Sounds like the genders of your adapter are backwards? Should be able to plug an HDMI M-M cable, into a DVI, with an HDMI female socket, and DVI male pins, into a DVI female socket on the device.
