Lots of FPSs, action games and a few platformers here and there will offer you the good old easy, normal, hard option when starting. Older games seem to offer you a choice more often than newer ones it seems to me. It's now more popular to not offer an option but have the game play through once on the equivalent of normal then have you unlock more difficult settings as you finish each one. It's a cheap and dirty way to offer some replayability I guess. Normally I choose normal, never easy. I'll chose hard if I know the type of game well or know exactly what to expect but usually not otherwise. Which do you usually go for?

I choose hard and use cheat codes. If I don't have cheat codes I choose easy.

Hard. Call of Duty 4 is the first and only FPS that I was unable to finish on the highest difficulty level.

Normal typically too. I play for entertainment, not frustration, as ObiDon does. Only in a few titles have I played on harder difficulties.

Edit - When playing FPSs on LAN with other humans, I usually through in a few bots with high AI/difficulty to add balance to the teams, if we are running short on human players anyway.

Sarcasm I hope? What's the point of playing like this?

Had a hell of a time with the TV station, but the second part of the sniper mission is where I gave up (after you do the long distance snipe). I do normal difficulty. I'm an above average player in multiplayer, but the hard mode is usually too hard to be enjoyable for me. I could grind through it, but that's no fun.

Sarcasm I hope? Why not use cheat codes, it's only a game? Play it how you want to.

I choose easy. It still takes me a year or two to get through a game. (Maybe longer. My current games I'm slowly going through are HL2 and Tomb Raider: Legend. How long have those been out?) If I played more often, I'd probably have enough skilz to choose normal.

Sure play it however you like I just can't fathom getting any enjoyment out of a game this way. To each his own, I'm the last person on earth to say otherwise I just wasn't sure if he was being sarcastic or not.

Normal, playing on Hard usually isn't much fun. Most people who I know that play on hard tend to enjoy the destination more than the journey.

Usually Normal.

Some games I play on harder difficulty, Call of Duty 4 I played on Hard and Call of Duty 2 I beat on Veteran.

I Am Death Incarnate!!!

Except Far Cry, where "Realistic" was too realistic. Look there are four guys. Hmm, I'm dead. Okay I'll duck this time, nope, dead again. This time I won't even leave the elevator, dead. Maybe I'll just freeze when the level starts, dead. Killed while level loads, this sucks. Back to "hard".

I wasn't. I actually play like this. I try not to completely gimp the game though. For example in Contra, I just used the code to get lives, and in RPGs I usually just do a quick level up code or money code. It just saves me time really.

On the newer games it's usually hard. On older ones it's medium, easy(-ish) if I'm playing Alpha Centauri.
