If a friend came up to you with a food item and said "This is gross and you've got to try it," would you?

Yea. I would participate in a lunchroom contest. We would take a little sunny d bottle and pass it around our table putting food items in there. No clue what went in, just nothing toxic. Then we would have contests on chugging, chuncks and all...

Men are notorious for this kind of thing. "Damn! This tastes like sh!t, try it..."
<sputter>
"Jesus, you're right, that DOES taste like sh!t!"

Much like the vaunted:
"Damn that hurt!"
"What?"
"I put my finger in my eye like this - try it."
<tries it>
"Jesus - you're right, that DOES hurt! That's weird, lemme try it again...."

I think it's a leftover from evolution/Darwinism, but don't quote me on that.

It doesn't have anything to do with being male or female. It has everything to do with being dumb or not.

My Nepalese co-workers eat some of the strangest things...

One day, one of these co-workers brought in spicy dried mango (or mango-like fruit, I'm not sure which). An American co-worker tried it and said it was so horrible, I just HAVE to try it; so I naturally did. The problem was that it continued to taste worse and worse the longer it was in your mouth. In fact, even after you spit it out, it continued to taste worse by the moment.

Between the two of us, we downed 1 1/2 boxes of Altoids and all the mouthwash at my desk. My breath was rank for another day or so...

how is it dumb? maybe your friend does not like it but you think its good....

It really depends on what it is and if it looks nasty or not.

It depends on which friend it is. I've been friends with this one guy since 8th grade (i'm 34 years old now), and we've had this ongoing game of oneupmanship going for many years. If he brought me something gross, I would be honor bound to eat it; otherwise I would catch hell from him and his brothers for years to come.

It's like the "Courtesy Sniff," according to Jeff Foxworthy. You know, when a guy finds something that smells digusting, he'll take a big whiff and nearly pass out, then say "Hey! Darryl! Come here; you gotta smell this!" And Darryl will promptly come over and, seeing what guy #1 just went through, will also take a sniff and nearly pass out. It is, according to him, because men are naturally drawn to things that smell and taste horrible.

To put this in context, I know some people who visited the Coca Cola museum is Georgia(?) years ago. Anyway, there was a soda called Beverly's (I think) that somebody tried, hated, and recommended to everybody else. The guys would try it knowing it was gross and the girls just wouldn't. It was some obscure soda that people apparently enjoy in other countries. I would have tried it in a heartbeat.
