If a bluetooth module is wired up wrongly could the OS still detect something?

Would it detect anything at all? I may have missed a cable somewhere in my laptops bluetooth module, it hasent been working since i dismantled the laptop to clean the fan (dell vostro 1700 laptop) but the system does detect a "base system device". Theres no 64 bit drivers for this device but it was working prior to my dismantelling of the laptop and my reinstall of windows, the last install was also 64 bit vista where it worked. I want to figure out if this is a software problem related to the reinstall or if i messed up and wired it wrongly.
