I have that problem every once and a while. Normally I have to reboot or it happens again.

Windowsupdate locked up. It's a "fatal" error, so you'll have to reboot. Quickest way is just to hit the reset button, as trying to restart through the Start button will probably take a half hour.

I've had this happen on two occasions running a PIII and Win2k. One time it was a title on a URL stored in favorites on IE 5.5, the other time or two it was caused by clean manager trying to find old files to compress. And of course, I didn't correlate the two problems until well after I initiated the actions that caused them. The problem was solved by shortening the title of the URL ...it was ungodly long ...some musical instrument store with every conceivable instrument known to mankind in the title and secondly, to remove the registry entry that involved sageset getting hung up on finding old files to compress.

Does this occur on startup before starting anything up?

Have you turned off any services before this happened? Any conflicting scheduled tasks or startup apps?

You almost certainly have some kind of plug-in that is being loaded by IE and is running away with your CPU.

Download "Process Explorer" from www.sysinternals.com.

Run IE and look at process explorer's view of IE. Hit Ctrl-D to show Dll's loaded in the currently selected process in the lower pane. Look through the list and see if you see any suspicious Dlls there. You should scrutinize ANY Dll that is NOT provided by Microsoft that IE is loading. Try to find out more information about the Dll.

Frequently, Macromedia's Flash player will hang my IE. This is a 3rd party plug-in Dll. The only two Dll's that show up under IE in my Process Explorer view are the Google Toolbar and the macromedia Shockwave player. All the other Dlls in IE's process are from Microsoft. Your system should be similar.
