Somehow, someway my IE 6.0 has been hijacked by some type of subversive advertising application. At the top of EVERY Explorer window that I open an advertising window pops up with local ads. When I mouse over it shows http://servedby.advertising.com/with the number of whatever ad is being shown. When I click on the ad it takes me to the local company that has been paying to advertise. According to BellSouth (I've got an ADSL line) this is not something they are doing. I have been, as of yet, unable to figure out how to get this "feature" to uninstall.

I'm running Win98 with IE 6.0.

So far I've gone into remove/install programs and have not found the application that has somehow installed to make this all happen. Having no success there I hoped that uninstalling and reinstalling IE 6 would get rid of it. Going back to IE 5.5 did not do it. Reinstalling IE 6.0 hasn't fixed it either... My IE is very unstable since this has happened it's not uncommon for it to lock up and then close out.

Does anyone have any advice or do you need more information to ascertain the source of the hijack browser?

sm

Try a search for ad aware or spybot search and destroy. They are both good at removing ad problems.

Thanks for your help. I'll do as you both suggest.

and also from now on, u gotta eyeball the crap u install. if u can... do custom installs. sometimes, that helps u see what exactly the software might be bundled with.

Try this too: Go to start, run, type in msconfig - go to the startup tab - you might find your culprit there - disable it from starting up, then find the file and delete that sucker - also edit your registry so there are no more calls to the file - Windows will get all PMS like if you don't delete the registry keys.

Spybot is better, the new version can block spyware without your intervention. It is REALLY good, and it finds more stuff then AdAware, I tested.

Personally I stick with Spybot, Ad Aware kind of sucks since they got purchased recently.
