IEEE 1394 on Mobo vs. PCI card

The only thing better for onboard support is that it won't fill up your PCI bus if you've got other things on it. (RAID controller, sound, extra VGA, etc. etc.)

Actually i think many onboard solutions actually use the PCI bus.

What kind of new MB's don't include firewire ports on them? And if you plan on buying a PCI card anyway, why not just get it on your MB? The performance difference will be negligible, and if anything the firewire on your MB will be a bit better.

I haven't looked at MBs in a while. I was surprised to find that very few AMD 64 Bit boards under $150, of which there are many, have Firewire on board.

They all have USB 2.0.

A good FireWire card will retail at about $30, wich is pretty much the difference between a mobo with built-in firewire and one without.

BTW, my P4P800-E Deluxe has two FireWire 400 ports.

I have both. Best performance and reliability comes from the PCI (Adaptec) card. I have several 1394 devices including my scanner.

I'm very envious.

I'm rather young and already have gray hair because of the stress I've dealt with the past years. My career lost me a very good woman which no computer in the world can replace. Don't feel envious.

As Twsmit said, pretty much 99% of all onboard firewire controllers are running off the PCI bus. So either way you're going to be using the PCI bus. With a PCI card you at least get to pick what kind you want to put in there.

That card works with Windows just fine. I've covered thiss before!

No Firewire 800 card will work with windows if you go by why the reviwer had a problem.

Firewire 800 will work in windows if you do your homework.
