IED's in Iraq

From what I understand (and I may be completely off), IED's in Iraq generally use a cell phone as an ignition system. Simply wiring up the ringer and then calling it.

Why don't the convoy's over there jam cell phones for ~500 yards in every direction. It's not like the military cares about knocking out peoples phone calls for a few minutes as they pass through.

Any reasons why not? At least this way they'd be forced to go back to running at you with a bomb strapped to them which is easier to deal with then a car on the side of the road.

if you had any clue what you were talking about, you'd know that they've already been through this part of the war...

Its not just cell phones that can be used though. They can use remote control cars, garage door openers, anything that can receive a signal will work.

That would end up being a LOT of frequencies to jam

answer: they do

lots of defense contractors are getting paid lots of money to build newer/better jammers just to fight IEDs. theyve had some success. while its quick by military standards, there is still a delay from r&d to widespread use

meanwhile, the bad guys are not all in the stone age. they recruit or can employ some pretty smart technical people that are always coming up with new ways to defeat the jammers. new jammers sometimes end up in enemy hands. foot soldiers carry them too, and sometimes... :( anyway, theres so many ways to send a signal remotely (not even necessarily wirelessly)

i would link to an article but im lazy

Gotcha, didn't think much about the short range stuff. Just saw a news story about the IED's construction and I figured they would use them (jammers), but was curious if their was maybe a reason they did not.

What the hell ever happened to the MOAB? They showed it off before the start of "Shock & Awe," but we've never heard anything about it since...

Kinda hard to use that sort of ordinance in the middle of Baghdad..... Not exactly 'pinpoint' accuracy. While i'm sure they could manage dropping it on a single terrorist house, the collateral damage would make the news....

the USMC deploys CREW devices such as the Chameleon or the Hunter in country currently. (Look them up if you want info on them) Since the military has started deploying CREW systems RC IEDs have gone down a lot and the insurgents have begun using more command detonated IEDs.
