IE8 much slower than IE7?

I have an older computer, some 5+ years old. It used to be that when opening IE it was quick to open. I probably had IE6 at the time and over time upgraded to 7 and later 8. It seems that it takes a long time for IE8 to open. Is IE8 that much slower? I'm sure there may be many who can trash IE8 for various reasons, but I'm just talking speed right now. Might be a reason finally to switch to Firefox or backdate to IE7. Comments?

IE8 is usually quicker for me than IE7, but if you really want speed you should switch to Chrome.

IE8 isn't slower for me, but it may be because of your older pc. I'd switch to firefox or chrome personally.

IE8 scores better than IE7 in every benchmark I've ever seen. If 8 is running slower than 7 then it must be something other than the base browser.

Have you tried running IE8 without add-ons? iexplore –extoff
Is it still slow?

Its mostly that it takes long to load. My computer may be old by todays standards but it is still running XP and ran quickly when I first got it. Is Chrome a version of IE or a totally different browser like Firefox?

You might be able to speed up your IE8 by doing a couple things:
1. You can also try resetting Internet Explorer's settings by going to
--> Tools
-- > Internet Options and then the "Advanced" tab, and click "Reset..."
2. Run IE in No Add-ons Mode.
--> Go to Start
--> All Programs
--> Accessories
--> System Tools
--> Internet Explorer (No Add-ons) –
If this fixes the issue, then go to Tools- -> Manage Add-ons and enable the add-ons one by one to find which one was causing the problem.
Check out this guide as well: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Tips-for-solving-problems-with-Internet-Explorer
Good luck

One of my machines is slower than your slowest, and it loads IE8 in about 2 seconds. To be clear, I do not set IE to load any webpages at startup.

Currently IE loads MSN I think as default. Whatever webpage is set to load - I can see how that would affect speed in that regard.
