IE7 - Should I advise other users to download?

I am of course as many of you know part of a help desk team. We have been prompted with many questions regarding IE7 and it's release:

Should I download it?

Will it work with XXX sites(internal sites)?

Is it a security threat?

I guess my question is this. Should I have the end users stay at IE6 or download IE7? Is there any MAJOR problems with IE7 as of yet? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

If nobody in your org has been following along with the beta program and testing then, no. The right thing to do with IE7 or any new software is evaluate and test it then roll it out. AFAIK there are no problems with IE7. It's gotten a lot of testing and should be good to go. Any IT dept worth their pay would evaluate first though. It's just good practice.


For personal users, yeah go ahead and do it.

Well, I had all my co-it people install it and we are testing it and everything seems to be working fine. Should users download it if they have Windows 2000 Pro? Yes, with 500 employees, we still have some that run 2000.

I would just wait for it to be released via automatic (high priority) update via autoupdate and windows update next month. It should install itself then and if there is anything wrong with the current release (although a very small chance) they will know by then.

You might want to wait unitl it is in final release before doing a major rollout
That way MS should have most of the bugs worked out

Word has it that IE7 will be offically in final form around Oct 18 or so
and should be offered via auto updates around Nov 1 or so
Either way, as long as you have SP2 installed (XP) you should be good to go

It IS the final version but Microsoft is not distributing it with Automatic Updates for a month or so. However, he is saying that a lot of companies will wait for a month to see if there are bugs which will be resolved.

If you have tested IE7 in your environment and found no problems then go for it!

Yeah, my mom's got a Win2K laptop and was asking me why she could download but not install IE7. 😛

Yeah, definitely recommend it. Just be ready to deal with the security ramifications :laugh:

The first vulnerability in IE 7 was found less than 24 hours after release.

Although granted it's not huge and it was found in IE6 too.
