IE6 problem turned into a WinXP problem...

For the last couple of days, IE 6 has been crashing all the time. Especially if I have more than one window open or attempt to play any media in IE. So I went HERE and read about reinstalling IE 6.

Microsoft had 2 methods they said to try. I did the second one, editing the registry key that says that IE is installed. I changed the specified key to 0 and attempted to reinstall IE6. The installer said I already have a newer version of IE on my machine and quits.

So I did the First method. Which is to Run sfc /scannow. I did that. It didn't help, so the instructions said to reinstall/repair the WinXP installation.

I put in the WinXP disc, clicked the Install option, then Upgrade (Recommended), like the Microsoft KB article said. But when my computer restarts to do the reinstallation, it locks up after the nice Windows XP splash screen. I've done this a few times with the same results everytime.

Any suggestions on how I fix this little problem?

Thanks,
-Matt

try running adaware maybe spyware! just a guess spyware infects Iexplorer look and see what your mem usage is when opened and also see if anything else opens at the same time through the task manager! then post results!

I ran Ad-aware and it found some stuff (thanks Divx 5). That helped greatly (basically fixed it) with the IE problem, but I still get a WinXP Setup option everytime I reboot. And I still cannot do the reinstall with out it locking up on me.

Thanks for the tip!

That's odd. When I was having IE6 problems (doesn't everyone?) I managed to un-install it and re-install it rather easily. It didn't solve my problem though.

You know what did? Tweak IE 3.0. It works some serious magic on IE6.

Tweak IE 3, I haven't heard of that. I'll look for it.

BTW, after more testing, I still have the problem with playing media (like streaming video) in IE. It's still crashing IE.

Could also be a java problem. Got out to suns website, download and install the java handler for IE and set it up to be your default java handler.

I was having a ton of problem using ESPN.com, which ironically seems to recently have linked up with MSN. For some reason the intense usage of there causes IE to close or stop responding.

I installed jre 1.4 (or whatever it was) and that fixed it.

I stumbled on to it when I was fighting with IE6.

It works much like tweakUI. Allows you to have more than 2 simultaneous downloads. And a repair function that works.
