IE6 & OE- Cannot load anything in 2nd window?

Win 98 SE, Anytime a link requires the opening of a 2nd window to load, nothing happens in the 2nd window, no url, nada? If I right click a link and tick [ open in new window ] same problem. I have tried to change settings in internet options, advanced section and every where else I can think of without success. I reinstalled IE6 a couple of times, nada. The Microsoft Knowledge base has been down so I can't use that. I cannot relate this problem with any recent installs, the only new software put on this machine was done at the Microsoft update site, and those were critical types if you get my drift. Help!!!

Thanks for your responce. Fortunately I had no problem with IE6 nor OE6 since I switched some 8 odd months or so ago. This problem just seemed to pop up out of nowhere. I have found some work-arounds but it just seems to me that the fix may be a simple tick some where or a small reg hack. I am well aware how windows reacts and at least for me, will hic-cup on ocassion and some setting will need resetting, however in this case I have run out of smarts and need GURU level assistance. ronach

I have downloaded the trial version of " Opera " and will install it on Friday so I will have some time to get it set up and give it a go. I would however like to get IE6 fixed rather than do the old standby [ format and re-install ] thing. Thanks all for your suggestions. ronach

This is outta memory right now, I'll try to find you a link in case Im off a little, but the fix is:

start--->run
"regsvr32 urlmon.dll" (no quotes, obviously)

Then go into IE, Tools--->options--->programs--->reset web settings

That should do it. Good luck.

jfunk, I tried your suggestion, everything looked good during the process. problem still persists, I will find other copies of those 2 files just in-case mine are corupted and try the process again. Keep you posted.

haribo, as you suggested I am presently using [ Opera ] on a trial basis. It looks pretty good so far, once I get it to my own configueration requirements it will get a good trial run.

excellent suggestions guys, by the way this is my first time in many a moon that I had to ask for help, sure is nice to have competent people on my side. ronach

Okay, I did some more research and found one other person that the above fix did not work for.

His problem was eventually traced to directx 8. He just reinstalled it from microsofts site and it corrected the problem.

Give that a shot.

That was the only case of this problem I was able to find where URLMON.DLL was not the culprit.

jfunk, I re-installed DX8.1, no go, I replaced urlmon.dll from the win98 cd, ran the [ regsvr32 urlmon.dll ] command, also a no go. Thanks again for your suggestions, thankfully my eval of the opera browser is coming along fine. Guess I will have to wait until I reformat [ hate to say that, sounds like a newbie ] in order to get my IE6 running properly again. ronach

A friend is ahaving the same problem. I tried all the tips listed above with no results. Haven't tried a lower version of IE or reinstalled windows, any suggestions???

I found the problem!!! The culprit was a trashed OLEAUT32.dll file in the win\sys dir. One of the other computer users in the house [ who is in deep doo-doo about now ], downloaded the file [ winhvance ] and installed it. The file on installation replaced the original ole file with its own, which was defective. This other person, upon receiving an e-mail stateing that a new version of winhvance was available for download, did some checking and read about the oleaut32.dll file problem. This other person owned up to their indiscretion so the doo-doo isn't as deep as it could have been, if you guys get my drift. By the way, the wife doesn't like being called [ this other person ], what's with that anyway ? Hope this post helps out others in a similar situation. Thanks again to all you guys out there who took the time to try and give me a helping hand. I expected no less from you Anandtecher's and you didn't disappoint me. ronach
