I've tried going to tools/internet options/general/settings and choose "Check for newer versions of stored pages every visit to the page"

IE still loads from the cache and I have to hit refresh to get the updated version. I've also tried all the other settings with the same result.

I'm runing win98SE IE version 5.00.2614.3500

no but I didn't think I'd have to. I mean doesn't the setting "Check for newer versions of stored pages every visit to the page" mean just that?

I guess I should note that I would like to be able to keep my cache and history in place and still have IE get the newest version of the page from the net every time.

Yeah, best way to do it is to completely clear your cache files and then set the cache file size to 1MB (since you won't need to allocate any more than that to it now anyway).

I guess this is still not working for me. I've cleared the cache and set the cache size to 1mb and still when I visit a page it does not automatically get the latest version. I have to hit refresh... I know that I've run IE5 on win95 and gotten this to work. I'm starting to think my browser has a bug somehow.

I tend to agree with the bug theory. I have seen this happen before. Try installing IE 5.01 SP1. Don't go for IE 5.5 as I have found a few sites that have compatibility issues with it. 5.01 SP1 has been very stable and works well.
