IE5.5 Final Out

As with all OS updates I will wait a couple weeks to see if it hoses the earlier adopter's systems before I commit to it. There's nothing it has I really need anyway. But I did dl the 5.01 SP1. 🙂

Awesome. Ill have to install it in a couple minutes.

(edit: my original post be absolutley no sense what so ever 🙂 )

hehe at work this morning I was installing IE on all the PC's in a Comp Lab. I was downloading from ms.com. Well the first 5 now have 5.01 and the last 10 have 5.5. I didn't change what I was doin. Just went www.microsoft.com/windows/ie and clicked Download not noticing what it sai.

Nice, As I was upgrading these PC's 5.5 came out.

Kinda funny

I was told to "install latest IE version"

well it was the latest when I did it.

My big question - does it up yet more memory than IE5.01 ?

While I like some of the improvements in IE5 over IE4, nevertheless it uses a huge amount of memory, and often you have to kill all your browser instances to get it to give back all the memory. My old PC has only 64MB RAM, so even though I have 128MB of pre-allocated defragged swap file, nevertheless I find that all 192MB is used by only 3 or 4 instances plus Agent newsreader.

Wow that's crazy. I've had well over 20 instances of IE open before (don't ask) and it runs fine. Granted after you've open and closed it about 250 times my system in general starts crapping out. Nothing a fresh reboot won't take care of 😉 I'm curious to see how developers will implement IFRAMES. And it does seem to render a bit faster as well.

Something has changed in this version 5.5. In 5.01 when I clicked on an URL there was an hour glass next to the mouse pointer. Now, no more hour glass. If you move your mouse to the tool bar area then you'll see the hour glass. Has anyone remarked the same thing or it's just my machine.

It's been like that since IE 5.5 beta. I have no problems with this. I do like the IE repair option that came with IE 5.5 beta (in System Information, Tools). I hope this has been retained in the final version (still waiting a couple of days to download it, til traffic is slower & to check if a new major bug appears in the final version but wasn't in the beta (I have been running it for months).

*Couldn't resist, so I did it. I just hope I won't regret it. 🙁*

Anybody tried this with NT4 and active desktop intalled? (from IE4)... Does it leave active desktop installed? Or remove it?

I hope this doesn't get rid of active desktop... think I'll wait to upgrade to find out.

NikePete, funny to me that you mentioned that. I was just now noticing that when I clicked on this thread. I clicked a couple previous threads twice thinking I 'missed".

Toast if u have the active desktop already installed it won't get rid of it so u don't have worry about it
the only time it won't have it is if you put it on a machine w/o/ active desktop already installed

I tried 5.5 beta a while ago, and I really didn't like it... 5.0 was much better for me.. first of all 5.5 lags alot more (more than 4.0 to 5.0) and I like the feel of 5.0 better too.

I didn't like the 5.5beta either, however, the final release I like. I mean, nothing huge from a user's perspective from 5.01, but it will be interesting to see how developers utilize some of the new features...

It's REALLY annoying how the mouse cursor does not change to an hourglass when a page is loading. Who is the dumbass at MS thought this would be good feature?

Actually, I never have the hour glass since I changed it to a pulsating sword. To see your hourglass, just place your cursor on the toolbar or status bar. A little thumb exercise never hurts anyone.

Well, if you downloaded 5.5 then you can get in line behind me to download the fix for the new security bug that has been found already!!!!!!

Actually there is no patch yet, but there is a bug already. CNET News has a short news note about it. No info though, just that there is a bug.

Golly, I'm SHOCKED😛

I know you can move the mouse to the menu to get an hourglass. Sometime it appears when waiting for a page to load but only for a split second. They should have left it alone, I don't see what it adds by not having an hourglass. Without the hourglass I think I didn't click on the link at all so naturally, half the time, I click it again.

I hope they have an option to enable the old style in the next fix.
