IE won't connect to websites on first few tries!

As the subject says, I've got my laptop connected to my home LAN and IE consistently gives me 'Page cannot be found' errors on various sites. The LAN has a cable modem running into a 4 port Linksys router, with two computers connected directly to the router and a hub connected to the uplink port (hub has 3 computers attached that also share the cable modem, but they are hardly using the internet).

So... I'll open a page in IE and it loads and load and then I get the page not found error. If I refresh or hit GO it'll load the page. Just seems to have problems loading the first or second time. Could this have something to do with my network settings, as the same sites seem to load ok on the other PC that's connected directly to the router.

Something did get messed up on the laptop so I'm awaiting the recovery CDs from IBM so I can wipe the system and reinstall. Things didn't seem to be this way before the computer got screwed up a bit..

Any possibility that this is a networking problem and not something with the OS/computer itself?

Thanks in advance,
Mike

ps - it just happened as i tried to post this message! AhHH!

You could have an unreliable cable somewhere in your setup. If it doesn't happen on other computers, I'd try switching the cable that connects your laptop to the network with a cable from another computer that does work. Good luck!

I believe I've seen that happen in the past with my IE too. I think it's caused by a bug in certain versions of IE. What version of IE are you using? I don't see it with IE 6.

I'm using IE 6 now on both computers. Problem seems to be with the router or the network/internet settings. When I connect the cable modem directly to the computer it works perfectly (i.e. right now). When I plug everything in through the router IE won't load pages, Outlook won't connect to email servers, etc. The router is a Linksys (won't have it too much longer...planning on replacing it with a wireless when I get some more cash). Are there any settings that I should be aware of when using the router? I read that some ports need to be opened when gaming and that sort of thing, but do I need to set up a proxy server or anything to get things working?

Thanks,
Mike
