IE will not show source

I've had this happen on this computer in both win2k and XP, IE 5.5 and 6. I simply cannot view the source of any webpage. I select the option from the View menu, the menu disappears and that's the end of that. Notepad or any other editor does not pop up. Anyone have an idea as to what would cause this? The only solution I've found is a reload of the OS.

Though I'm not sure why deleting my temporary internet files would help, I did it anyway and I still have the problem. Has anyone else encountered a bug like this?

Weird why it didn't work, I had the same problem and found clearing my temporary Internet files worked as described in this MS Knowledge Base article. Maybe your notepad.exe is corrupt?

It took a bit of effort to find a page with frames, but once I did, I tried it. No change, attempting to view the source does nothing.

Go into Internet Settings, then Programs. Make sure that Notepad (or whatever you wish to use) is associated with View Source

Confused

Notepad comes up when I view source, it just contains no data.

Now this is funny - I went into tools. internet options, programs. Saw that there is no place to define a 'view source' program like the previous poster mentioned.

Anyway, now my view source is working when it hasn't in a year.

Whatever.

Try these.... if you haven`t already:

*Cookie Folder Location
This issue can also occur if your Cookies folder is located on an NTFS partition and you do not have at least Change permissions for the Cookies folder. To resolve, make sure your account has sufficient permissions on the Cookies folder.

*Incomplete Page Download
If you press the ESC key before the page has completed loading then the "View Source" menu item may not be displayed.

*View Source Restriction
The View Source function may have been restricted by your Administrator. To resolve, see the "NoViewSource" registry value in Internet Explorer Restrictions.

*Invalid Temporary Directory
You may also receive this error if the path specified for the TMP environment variable is invalid. To resolve, make sure that the TEMP directory is a valid directory and that there is sufficient space on the drive.

*Invalid View Source Program
If you have specified an alternate program to view the source code. To resolve, make sure that the alternate viewer is valid and operational.

*Right-click disabled by Web Page
Some web pages may implement a restriction to stop visitors from right-clicking on the web page. The source may still be viewed by clicking the main "View" menu, then "Source".

Some pages can use javascript to tell IE that viewing the source is not allowed

Put the domain in the "evil site" list. Tools/Options/Security/Restricted sites. Type *.yahoo.com, click add. (or whatever the domain is) You should be OK after that. Post the URL, if you want us to check.

I had the same trouble on my pc at home. I finally had to load netscape to view the source. Still can't get IE to open up the source. If I ever figure it out I'll let you know.
