IE vs. Firefox Cache Clearing

Why is it that IE basically locks your system for 2-10 minutes while it clears your cache while firefox seems to handle even weeks of cache without so much as even a peep from the HD....
 
assuming the default cache was not changed, IE's default is like a gig or so whereas FF's is only 50 MB
 
You also don't need to clear FF's cache - even when it's full, it doesn't slow anything down, and unlike IE, a big cache doesn't cause you to lose the ability to properly save images.

No, I don't use extensions. It's a userContent.css that eliminates all the ads on AT forums (and changes the look slightly) - read the comment block at the top for how to use it. AT Forums with no ads is two screenshots.
