IE & scroll down address history...

This probably has an easy answer, but I don't know enough to make sense of it...

I went to type in "anandtech" in IE. I usually just type in "a-n-a" and the rest of the address pops up in the history; I scroll down to the address to avoid having to type the rest in. Easy enough.

Last night, however, I go to type in "a-n-a" and a whole slew of other 'questionable' addresses appear in my history, even though I haven't viewed any of those sights. I proceed to go through the rest of the alphabet in the address line and find several more sites that I know have not ever been viewed on my computer (private, home computer, no other access, and I know what I view on a regular basis).

I searched through the cookies and temp. internet files to see when these sites were supposedly visited, but can't find anything related to the sites found in the history. I scrolled down in the history to view one of these sites to see what it was, and then checked back w/ cookies/temp int. to see that NOW the site shows up with the current date/time for "last modified, last viewed, last changed" etc. Prior to me physically clicking on it in the history, the site showed up nowhere else in the other files.

LONG STORY SHORT: I was under the impression that the only way an address can appear in the scroll down history is if that site was physically viewed by someone on the computer. I have a cable internet connection, with a wired router and Panda Plat. 2006 internet security installed. I'm just wondering if and how someone could remotely access certain sites from my computer, leaving no traces except in the scroll down address history?

Hrm... Wish I had an answer to that. Apparently the dropdown menu is separate from the history, and can be added to independently. Or the same program just covers its own tracks in the history/temp/cookies, but ::Shrug::, sounds like too much work.

Thanks for the comments so far. Has anyone else ever seen this kind of thing before?
