IE save as ... feature only saves as a bitmap, and it isn't what you think.

additional info: ZoneAlarm Pro 5.5.062 (current version), reg cleaner.

I know Firefox is the solution, but I'd really like to get an answer for this.

When I right click a picture in IE the "save as..." option will only save the picture as an untitled .BMP. All resolutions say that the temp internet folders need to be cleaned up. That is not the problem as they are empty and I have manually deleted them. I have included ZoneAlarm into the mix because it has a cache cleaner that I use to delete all files when I am done using the computer. I use reg cleaner from time-to-time to clean up the reg. I also use XP's disk cleanup and defrag regularly. I've looked at registry settings and they seems to check out, but I might be looking in the wrong area. I will admit I have tried to be systematic about what is causing the problem, but I swear I have just turned on the computer and it no longer works right. The since I have been experiencing this problem 2 things have changed, SP2 and ZoneAlarm 5.5 (I liked 4.5 but it was giving me a hard reboot after the SP2 upgrade.)

The kicker (or so I think) is that if I create a new user account in windows, IE works fine in that newlly created account! I then use the File and Settings transfer wizard.

Reg Cleaner has a OLE Cleaner that I just noticed was on extra powerful. could that be toasting the registry?

Any ideas to solve this problem would be helpful.

reg cleaners are iffy imo, before using them i would suggest you export a copy of the known good reg.

you may be able to do a repair install of windows,i would backup my files and settings first though.

It's usually the cache that does it. I had the same issue, until I cleared the IE cache on this machine. Only took like 20 minutes. :|

Thanks for the quick reply, Blazer. As I wrote the topic I was thinking about the stuuf I have used to keep my computer cleaned up and i just thought of the regcleaner.

I'll create a new account and not use recleaner and see if that solves the problem.

Clear out your temp files, close IE, and try again. It's a known issue with IE for years now, and for some reason they haven't fixed it yet.
