IE not working on Vista

My friend recently purchased a gateway with Vista on it. He has the computer connected directly to the cable modem and has windows firewall on as well as mcfee spyware blocker. When I was setting it up for him, the internet and IE worked fine.

Just the other day, internet explorer stopped working. It will state that it connects to a website ( www.yahoo.com) and it waiting for a reply, but will not move after that.

I ran ipconfig at the command prompt and the computer does have an IP address. I was able to also ping yahoo.com and other websites. I hooked the cable modem to my computer and it worked fine.

I believe the computer had spy ware of some sore, so I opened the pre-loaded windows defender and tried to update, and it could not update. I ran the old version of windows defender and nothing was found.

So, does anyone have any suggestions to fixing this? I guess I should have tried loading firefox, but I forgot my flash drive when I was over.

Thanks

Have you tried shutting off the firewall? Perhaps it's interfering with the connection. You say there's McAfee Spyware Blocker, is that the only McAfee product on the computer? Are you sure there's no McAfee firewall as well?

Go into Add/Remove and see if there's anything there like Internet Optimizer or newdotnet... if they are there, remove those!

Try killing all startups with msconfig (Start > Run > type: msconfig... select Selective Startup, uncheck Load Startup Items). You don't want to keep it like this obviously, but if there's anything that's loading up on bootup that's affecting the connection, this may help you narrow down what could be causing it.

Most of the time when IE does not work it is actully the Intenet connection system does not work.

Jack-

I hooked the cable modem to my laptop and the internet worked fine. His computer is connected directly to the cable modem and the cable company (TW) stated that on their side, the internet connection was fine.

Hey try these steps :
safe mode with networking .

browse yahoo through its IP address ( in the address bar type in the IP address of yahoo instead of yahoo.com )

Try to stop and start the "dhcp client " and "dns client" service on the pc and

try power cycling

and then try to run ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

and one more step
try to see if your proxy settings are fine or not : open internet options -> connections->LAN settings and see if any of the boxes are checked or not . If yes then try to remove the check marks and see if you can go online or not .

It's the firewall.

The MMC for Vista's firewall is fairly indepth. Browse through it and make sure IE isn't blocked.
