I know I'm asking one of the dumbest questions of all time...

But since I installed the WinXP SP1, I've had problems with the system. Almost EVERY SINGLE FREAKING ANANDTECH page (and a fair amount of other pages) show pictures as red X's instead of the file. When I right-click -> Show Picture, the picture pops up immediately - reguardless.

If I load up one thread, certain avatars will be missing, or the profile and PM button, or something similar. When I refresh the page, they're loaded but other pictures that were once there are now missing (red X)

WTF

ideas?

current system config

a couple of things to try:

delete all your temp internet files by going to tools->internet options->delete files->tick delete offline content, then in main options window tick "automatically". restart browser for best effect.

go to tools->internet options->advanced->tick "show images" and "smart image dithering". if they are already on, turn them off, restart browser, then turn them on again.

sorry, maybe something to spark ideas. i installed XP SP1 yesterday and have not had this problem so far.

I've already cleared cache and cookies and even rebooted afterwards. I know "show images" is checked, but I'm not sure about smart dithering. I'll toggle them when I get home. Thanks for the help.

I only use IE to browse M$ pages (I use Opera) and have noticed this same problem since I installed sp1. Haven't been able to fix it but I'll give your suggestions a try.

There is a problem with IE and adobe v 7 jpegs (or something like that). I didn't really pay attention to the details since I don't use IE (there is a discussion on photo.net -- try searching for adobe).

Anyways -- a simple and free fix is to use mozilla...

And, since I'm not interested in using anything but IE, that's not an option. :) That doesn't fix anything anyway. That just gets around the problem - which is hardly ever good. :) Anyway, I've been using Photoshop7.0 with IE6.0 since a few months after PS7 came out and haven't had any problems. This didn't happen at all until I installed Service Pack 1 and has been happening since Day1 after the install.

Done that and it still happens. What is smart image dithering anyway???

Well, dithering is a means to display a high-bitrate image on a lower bitrate display, eg a 24-bit image on a 16-bit display, or, typically, a 24- or 16-bit image on an 8-bit (=256 color) display. Of course, you might have known that and might just be wondering what's smart about MS' smart dithering - well, that, I don't know either. Probably not a whole lot, though. :)

Oh crap... I forgot to try repairing Internet Explorer. Can somebody check? I'm at work so I can't check to see if "Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 and Internet Tools" is listed in Add/Remove Programs after the service pack 1 install...
