IE modifier - be more like netscape? or proxy conversion?

Work here just changed their proxy system, and now Netscape won't let me through. IE works fine still.

1. Is there a way to convert the IE proxy config file to a netscape one and save the file locally instead of on the intranet? It's long (due to different access/servers for various internal and external sites)

2. Is there a modification out there I can install on IE to make it more netscape-like? In particular, I want to be able to control-click links (or other key combo) and do something similiar to the tabbed browsing of netscape. I often use a dozen or more windows at the same time and IE is just unwieldy!

edit: got it working! They don't want us using netscape, so when they changed the proxy server IP they didn't update the proxy config file netscape was set to pull from. I looked at both the one IE used and the netscape one, found the change, and all is well now. I am still curious about question 2 though...

Avant Browser is based on IE, and allows you to open many windows at once within the same browser. You can tile them or stack them up. I would have sworn it allows you to tab the windows as well but I can't find the setting now. You can even choose to open a whole group of links with one click of a button.

It still has a couple things that need to be worked out (can't rightclick on your favorites), but it's much better than IE.

Why don't they want you to use Netscape?

Anyway, MyIE2 has tabbed browsing, but it still has the rest of IE's flaws.

Big corporation = "We must be standardized on all software - you may not install anything that IT has not approved and examined and decided that it's needed by all. You may not be different, think different, or need different things. No. Now go away and let us get back to playing games on our PDAs." Since IE is already installed, it's easier for them! Plus they've made the corporate intranet site IE dependent - it's not just ugly on NS, it flat out won't work at all.

You say that like it's a bad thing. I work in one of those IT departments and frankly it's a PITA to fix people's machines when they have a ton of extra things installed that can potentially cause problems, and since we can't play favorites we have to be very broad. And also it's not like it's your PC, it's your company's PC.

I know, I know. I do understand the benefits of the standard config. However, I've run into too many occasions of being prevented from having software that I (or someone else) NEEDED. I'm a R&D chemist, and IT depts seem to think that everyone is a office worker who needs nothing but Windows, MS Office, and IE. edit: Almost forgot the bane of my existence, perhaps the worst piece of software I've ever used - Lotus Notes! I know it's powerful and does lots of things, but it's as user unfriendly as anything I've ever used, and it's hugely over bloated. Ever try running it on a 266 mhz machine? It ain't pretty!

Then complain to management, let them fight over it because if you really need it for your job you should be able to convince the higher-ups to make you a special case.

We use Outlook/Exchange so I've only seen Notes when we've had to people to connect to client mail systems but I agree it's an ugly POS. It's really sad that there's no good Exchange replacement yet.
