I am working on friends Dell running WinXp Home. The dealie is this . IE will no open links. i.e if there is a link on a page or a forum you click on it a second browser page opens and stalls in never even returns error 404 . I solved this by installing firefox (great!!!) as a browser. However this pc has some sort of intergrated firewall/av/privacy center crap. In the aformenetioned "security" center in order to renew your AV subscription you click a link that says, guess what ,renew, however this opens a page using, you guessed it IE.No IE means no current AV definition which means no happy Dell owner.

I have so far done the following : Installed firefox as default browser, reinstalled IE v6 sp1, updated windows etc.......

Any help on why IE won't open links....

Sidenote: The general sh!ttine$$ of the whole M$/DELL/ make everthing into a big bundle of code was made apparent with this adventure......

I hate how some companies insist on IE being the default browser to open links. Canon does this too and it's infuriating. Try copying the link location (right click, copy link location) to the clipboard and pasting it into the address bar of an open IE window, then press enter. That should work.

As for your bigger problem, why the links won't open in the first place, I've read that if you delete your index files in your Internet Explorer temp folder and then restart, that fixes things. Good luck!

If the site doesn't use ActiveX and only demands that the browser be recognized as IE, you could solve this by getting the User Agent Switcher to make Firefox look like IE.
