IE Explorer Problem - PLEASE HELP!

Not infrequently I start two (and sometimes more) instances of IE so I can keep independent threads of research separate. A problem recently developed with multiple instances of IE running that I would appreciate help with. This problem started soon after upgrading to XP and IE Ver 6.

Now, the second instance of IE opens and will load the specified home page as expected. However, if I try to go to another site in the second instance, the second instance will minimize and the desired site will open in the first instance. In other words, I can start IE multiple times but only the first one opened responds no matter which instance I am using. The additional instances of IE only display the specified home page and cannot be used to go to other sites.

Intrestingly, if a second instance of IE opens due to a link (e.g. clicking "Communities" on the Anand home page), it does work completely independently as expected. The problem only and consistently occurs when starting new instances from the desktop shortcut.

Please help. It is important that each instance of IE running be independent. It always was this way so I am unable to determine why it is different now.

Thanks but that option is already checked.

I also noticed that my statement in the original posting ...if a second instance of IE opens due to a link (e.g. clicking "Communities" on the Anand home page), it does work completely independently as expected... is incorrect. The problem exists no matter how IE is started.

With additional testing I found that the problem only occurs when using "Links" to access a new site. If the address is manually typed in, each additional instance of IE behaves as expected.
