IE Explorer 99% CPU usage freeze

I am having a problem that has come about after a Mozilla install and uninstall. Now when I use Internet Explorer it freezes the machine and when I control-alt-delete I see that IE Explorer is using 99% CPU and I need to terminate the program. I Have 1.5GB of Ram and my cpu is is an AMD 2600+ XP chip on an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe mother board. Does anyone have any insight into this problem?

Problems with Internet Explorer are often because of add-ons that do not function properly. You can see them from within IE from tools -> manage add-ons. Though I'm not sure how to get to those options if you cannot get IE to work.

...or spyware... enable Automatic Updates to avoid Windows Update and be done with IE entirely (like Arkane said 😀) until V.7 when hopefully M$ fixes some of the myriad vulnerabilities.

solution: don't use IE. use Opera. it's fast, easy to use, and now free. it includes many advanced features the firefox can only get as addons such as the best zoom, RSS reader, special mouse functions, mail, and best of all...it's really really fast!

I have the same issue at times. I will have open sometimes 10-15 IE windows and notice that the PC is a bit sluggish (99% CPU usage from IE). I will close all but 1 instance of IE but the CPU usage is still at 99%. Closing that last one fixes this issue.

disable all your add-ons, then run a sfc /scannow to "reinstall" proper versions of important IE components that may have been replaced by malware.

I'll be putting in a biggger HDD soon, so my solution is to rebuild from scratch rather than image the old onto the new. I just wish I knew exactly what I installed that triggered this junk in the first place. Sloppy, I know...
