IE Downloads

whenever a file is dowloaded from IE, let's call this file test.exe, it downloads to my C local temp drive in documents and settings and then copies it over to my D drive where the file is to be saved. All is fine unless a really large file is downloaded, then it takes 3-4 mins to copy it over from one drive to another.

is there any way to tell IE to download file test.ext directly to D drive to eliminate the coping time wasted other than using a download manager tool. i'm guessing the path of the local temp folder needs to be changed, but where?

thanks

Internet Explorer 6 Miscellaneous
Change Default Download Location

SUMMARY: Force Internet Explorer 6 to download files to a different location on your hard drive.

Would you like to change the default location where Internet Explorer 6 downloads files? If so, you can perform this change by editing the registry. Note that this tip is for experienced users only - making incorrect registry changes can cause problems such as keeping your machine from booting! Standard disclaimers apply.

1. Click "Start" - "Run".

2. Start the registry editor by typing "regedit" and press ENTER.

3. Scroll down to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software
Microsoft\Internet Explorer.

4. In the right pane, double-click "Download Directory".

5. When the "Edit String" dialog appears, enter your new download directory. Make sure to type this EXACTLY correct - there is no option to browse for directories! When done, click "OK".

6. Close the Registry Editor. Close all open Internet Explorer windows. You may also need to reboot your computer or logoff and login for this change to occur.

all this does is change the default location of what folder IE uses to save files, i'm referring to files having to be copied from document and settings, temp folder after its downloaded and then to the saved destination folder.

so if i download a 20 meg file called abc.exe, after the file is saved the hd, windows copies it from documents & settings. temp folder to my D drive folder. it's the coping part that is annoying as this can take a while, i want IE to just save the file directly to drive-D without having to copy it over first.

thanks.

Files that you actually Download Will Save to whatever path you set in that Registry Key
The only time a file goes into Docs & Settings is if an app is Downloading and Opening a
file ... for Example: you are on a web page and want to view .pdf documentation on a
product ... you hit the link & tell it to OPEN the file ... then it will be saved in Docs & Settings/temp

If you really want to be able to change download paths all the time, you need something like
Download accelerator plus, which integrates into IE6 & other browsers and will let you change
the path for every download
