IE doesn't connect (WinXP home)??

I can't find a good way to shorten this to search for it on google or anything, so:

I've cleared a bug off a computer, and everything boots ok. I edited msconfig such that nothing is booting but essentials. I also used process explorer to make sure nothing else was interfering. I ran a virus scan and ad aware, proceeded by a winsock reset.

Here's the thing: Ipconfig /all shows the proper connection information. I can ping outside websites, along with the gateway. But, I can't get IE to connect for the life of me. Any ideas on what I can do?

make sure you have a working site name in the address bar.
check tools->internet options->connections->LAN settings and make sure you don't have a proxy server set.
use nslookup from the command line to find the IP of a site, such as google, and try accessing the site by IP only.

what exactly do you mean by a winsock reset?

The IP i'm trying to connect to is right, I've actually checked with nslookup. Winsock reset is a way of basically reseting the winsock. There's a tool put out by the guys who make Adaware which works really well. The other option is a the command line, which goes something like: netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
