IE and Firefox downloads not downloaded?

Hi all

Here is a bizarre situation. I am using FireFox version 3.0.11 as my main browser and recently I seem to be unable to download any files.

I click on a file I want to download and it seems to proceed okay, the download box appears and shows the progress. Once it is "downloaded" I try and rightclick on the file and it is not available to open or to go to the folder where it was saved.

I have manually gone to where I told the file to be saved, and it is not there. I have tried several times, with the same result.

The same thing is happening in IE. Google Chrome is the only browser that seems to be able to download any file.

This only started happening about three weeks ago. I don't recall installing any new software since then that would have an effect like this.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Have you tried using Windows Search to find the "missing" files?

Yes, the files that I have downloaded I knew where they were to be saved, but they are not there, not anywhere on my system. Why would IE be suffering from the same symptoms?

I even tried reinstalling FireFox, and a file I downloaded again isn't to be found.

I am wondering if there is something in the registry that may have been affected by some rogue software I installed?

Does this even happen when you right click the download link -> "Save Link As..."?

Yes, it happens when I do that too. When I right click on the file that I think has downloaded, the Open and Open Containing Folder options are greyed out. They where not greyed out a few weeks ago, before this started to happen.

Even when I double click on the downloaded file in the list, nothing happens. Before, the file would open.
