in 32 bit only [ 64 bit works ] for some reason i cannot open links on forum posts, either in the main tab or open in another tab, for example on anandtech in 'operating systems' when i click on 'New Topic' nothing happens, at the bottom left of the screen it shows error on page, i had to boot to vista to make this post, things ive tried.

restore and reset ie to default.

uninstall/reinstall both Java and Adobe Flash Player.

system restore to an earlier date.

scanned with Avira came up clean.

superantispyware came up clean.

I have the "Welcome to IE8" wizard pop up every other day when I first start IE8. Annoying as FvCK.

Hard to tell, from your description, but...

I was having troubles up the ying-yang with IE8 - and it turned out to be caused by Spybot S&D!

Specifically, it turned out to be the 'Immunize' feature in Spybot S&D...

If you're running Spybot, I suggest deleting it and cleaning all the 1000s of 'Immunize' entries out of your hosts file.

That's how I got IE8 working. ;)

interesting read !

but the only thing i had installed was Avira.

i only installed and used sas and cc afterwards, with no change.

ie 64 bit works fine, the real admin account has the same problem.

i was hoping there would be some command i could use but i have not found such.

it seems MS would make ie repairable/uninstallable/installable with all the problems ie can have, it isnt worth the hassel of reinstalling Win 7, esp with what i have seen it priced for, i have went back to vista , may have to stay there.:frown:

I've uninstalled IE8 three times - twice on my Vista laptop, and once on my friend's...

Oops! That's right... you're running 7.

Hrm...

Yeah, sounds like you're screwed blue and tattooed, unless you find a fix! :|

I have IE8 SpybotSD / Spyware Blaster / AdAwareSE on my computers and IE8 works fine. Even with the Immunize feature of Spybot enabled. But I do not have the Tea Timer turned on. On occassion it make be slow to open, but once it does it is fine.

Yep! That's the #1 symptom - extreme slowness!

I installed IE8 on my friend's $1200 HP Vista x64 lappy, and it turned it into a doorstop! Took (like) 2 minutes for IE8 to load - flash videos were unwatchable, etc. etc. etc...

OMG that thing was S-L-O-W!!! I thought I borked her lappy! :Q

We went back to IE7 and it was instantly S-M-O-K-I-N-G again!

I tried IE8 twice in 6 months - beta and final - and had the same problem(s)! The cure was returning to IE7.

I *think* it was RebateMonger that patiently walked me through 'the fix'.

LoL! Truth be told, it was probably to shut me up - with all my IE8 diatribes. The squeaky wheel gets the grease! :D

Anyway, the Spybot 'Immunize' problem is/was for real, but (according to the link above) Microsoft patched it during the last omnibus security update.

It's scenarios like this that make me mad that Microsoft isn't allowing installations of IE7 on Win7.

Off the top of my head, I believe Explorer 8 is considered a feature of Windows rather than a program.

Either install the browser of your choice, or at least have the (IE7 file) downloaded in advance so you can install it when you're done removing 8.

Browse <sic> to Add/Remove Programs. On the left of the window, there should be a link to 'Add/Remove Windows Features', and you should find Internet Exploder 8 in there. Remove it. Restart.

Get on with life using the browser of your choice.

Umm, that "Windows Features" doesn't actully uninstall anything, it just hides all the references to the program.

Yeah, it's not that simple...

Besides that, the other n00b was just being a start ass!

I'm browser neutral, for the most part, but I tend to prefer Firefox.

The thing is, I've been around long enough to remember when Netscape was it - period. Exclamation point!

Where is Netscape now? The same place Internet Explorer is headed!

Unfortunately (or fortunately) IE is hooked to the rest of the Windows OS, so you can't really get rid of it entirely.

Anyway, IE8 works fine as long as you don't run any conflicting 3rd party software....

I just installed spybot and ran something like 50,000 immunizations, and IE8 starts up fairly quick, so I'd say it's fixed. Within a second or 2

Well... if you're talking about slowness...

According to Microsoft, any number of 3rd party programs can cause problems for IE8.

I remember reading this '3rd party stuff' (MS saying they have no control over what other programmers do) when I was researching my problem(s), sooo...

I just Google'd "internet explorer 8 problems 3rd party software" and got 7.7 million results.

Chosen at random: http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/43338/140/ (TG Daily)

Redmond (WA) - Internet Explorer 8 might appear slower than other browsers because of the way it interacts with third party software, Microsoft has claimed.

The company said that add-ons, pluggable transfer protocols and non-Microsoft security software are causing IE 8 to bog down. Redmond insists that there is nothing wrong with the browser and suggests users run its Process Monitor tool to isolate the problems.

Writing in the IE blog, a Microsoft spokesman said that Process Monitor allows you to view all registry, file system, and process activity on your computer, and includes a set of filtering features to enable you to narrow down your view to just one process.

Users can filter out the processes that slow the browser and then save the list of acceptable processes. Add-ons can be disabled using Internet Explorer's "Manage Add-Ons" command under the Tools menu. The most troublesome add-ons typically are toolbars and browser helper objects, which will run with each new tab opened in the browser.

One of the major culprits, according to Microsoft, is the Skype add-on which slows the browser significantly. Microsoft does not provide a work around for the Skype problem but describes how to manage other add-ons here.

Pluggable transfer protocols, which are typically installed by download managers, can also affect the browser's performance. Microsoft was not telling anyone how to deal with them either.

Likewise it did not say how to fix problems with security software slowing down IE 8. Part of the problem is that some software scans content flowing through Internet Explorer, causing poor performance. Security software can strip out an HTTP header that tells servers to send back compressed content.

Despite all of that, Microsoft still claims that IE 8 is the fastest Web browser.

MS may not admit to the problems IE8 has but its real, i have no intention of calling and paying ts $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ its there problem, and there os.

what i had to do was an inplace upgrade and reactivate, somewhere someone knows the cmd's to fix ie8, the EU may be on to something wanting ie8 removed from win7, it may be a good thing to have an os without ie.
