IE 8 favorites sometimes don't work

(I assume this is at least a quasi-operating system question given its Microsoft).

Home Compaq desktop machine, about a year old, came with Win 7 64 bit preinstalled. I use IE 8 as my main browser (my son uses Firefox on the same machine for his browsing). In the last day or so I've noticed that some of my favorites no longer work if I click on them & its usually the ones I use the most often. Seldom used ones still work and I can get to the sites by googling them but it's a PIA.

Norton Suite installed, no viruses, Win 7 fully up to date.

A few days ago I noticed the website icons in my favorite menu got somewhat scrambled (what I mean is some sites have a special icon to the left of their name & some of those icons got switched the other day).

The only change I can think of recently was turning off Remote Assistance in a fit of paranoia.

Try starting IE in safe mode. either launch it from Accessories --> System tools or search for internet and choose the no add ons icon. Let me know if your shortcuts still don't work.

Also can you confirm that after selecting the shortcut, the correct url is put in the address bar?

Ran IE 8 in safe mode with same result-Favorites appear but don't work. When I click on a favorite the url does NOT appear in the address bar.

Please remember the real oddity-if I click on a favorite that I haven't used in months, it works. But if I use it fairly frequently eventually the favorite won't work. So far, once a favorite doesn't work it hasn't revived (worked) later on.

Tried all those, nothing seemed to work. Did a full virus scan also. When I came home today (after virus scan) IE 8 basically wouldn't work-it keep saying error on loading initial tab (google), closed that tab and repeat. Fixed that by resetting IE.

I've just installed IE 9 beta and that seems to work. It reports my nonworking favorites as empty, but I can add new copies of them (under IE 8 the new ones wouldn't work either).

Very mystifying.

Yep really weird. Haven't come across such a problem myself. I would try malwarebytes and combofix scans as well just in case though
