Click on your START button. In the list that pops up you should see an item saying Windows Update. Click on that but make sure you are logged onto the internet first as clicking on the Windows Update will automatically log you onto the Microsoft update site for your Windows version.

Once that screen comes up after checking for updates needed by your Windows version select the items listed for updating. One of the items you should see listed is Internet Explorer 6. Click on it to check it for downloading. It should download and auto install itself. You will be asked to reboot your system after the download and installation has finished. Do that.

If you see any items listed under Critical Updates select those also and have them download and auto install themselves.

If you are using a slow 56K dial-up system it can take a while to download some of the larger updates so in that case it may be a good idea to only download and install one large file at a time. If you have cable or DSL then the downloads are very fast.

i did what your talking about a while ago, what you have to do is get on a 9x machine or ME machine, then download this http://download.microsoft.com/download/IE60/fnlrtw/ie6/W98NT42KMe/EN-US/ie6setup.exe and choose custom install, then you can select an option somewhere in there like under advanced, to just download files, and not install them, and you can choose all the OS's you want IE for like XP 2000 or 98..... then it puts them in folder on your HD and its all downloaded, this is a good feature is your on broadband, and you want to install ie6 on someones computer with dial up, you just burn IE to cd then copy the files from cd onto the computer you wnat to install, for some reason, i dont think it will let you install from cd. Also, for some reason on win2k and winxp it wont give you a custom install option, so thats why i had to use win9x.
Good luck
