IE 6 won't connect to anything!

Ok, i'm a mozilla user but I need to get IE6 working again to test our application. Some time ago (not sure when) ie just stoped connecting to the net. If I type in www.slashdot.org down at the bottom of the IE window i see it scroll:
searching autosearch.msn.com
connecting www.slashdot.org.com
connecting www.slashdot.org.net
connecting www.slashdot.org.org

and then it gives me a popup "Internet explorer could not find the search page".

I've checked my dns properties under my tcpip and everything is normal, it's not set to append anything to anything.
I've hit the "restore to default" button under the Advanced tab in the options
I've even downloaded the IE6 installer, removed IE and reinstalled it....still nothing

It can't connect to ftp sites either 🙁

I'm going mad over this, mozilla, trillian, cuteftp all connect with out a problem. Besides IE, my SETI client and a previously working java application I wrote to connect to a site all can't connect now. But I'm most concerned about IE at the moment.

If anyone has any ideas I'd greatly appreciate your help

THANKS

if you're connected to a network and using win9x....then go back to IE 5.5.......6.0 has problems w/ win9x and networking for some reason....

10 bucks says you have it configured to use a proxy that doesn't exist...

uncheck "automatically detect and configure proxy settings" under "tools > options > connection > LAN settings"

bjork, i'll take a money order for that $10 😉

I am using windows 2000 and IE is not configured to conect to any proxy at all.

I've also checked my DNS info under my tcpip settings and that is all default (nothing) so that's not appending anything to it either.
I've downloaded the IE6 setup files and have uninstalled/reinstalled IE.......still no dice.

I'm thinking of downgrading to 5.5 or maybe even 4 to see if that helps.
I don't have any P2P stuff on here so I doubt it's spyware but I've seen some pretty sneaky spyware. Adaware picks up nothing and a breif search of the registry looks ok (as in nothing that shouldn't be there)

If anyone has ideas please toss them out there, i'm all ears (just FYI, format has already been mentioned...but i'd like to avoid that😉)

Thanks

LOL

I agree 100% and am about to do that anyway, but that will make me loose "support" from my company, not that I use it but they get.....irratatable 😉

Is there any registry setting somewhere in windows that makes it a pain in the butt?

seriously tho, IE's pushin me over the edge

send help soon
