IE 6 will only allow saving photos in bitmap files

IE 6 as inexplicably decided to only allow me to save any sort of photo as a bitmap. The image shows as a .jpg but when I click on file and save as it defaults to "bitmap". There is no option to change it to .jpg. I have tried the same images (wallpaper from digitalblasphemy.com in this case) with Netscape and there is no problem. I have not changed any of my settings so I don't know what is going on? Any suggestions?
