So i installed Vista 64-bit Ultimate on my machine got it all updated and running smooth (as smooth as it can be.) Everything works fine for 3 days then my IE 7 32-bit won't wok anymore, the 64-bit version works fine, but all my programs that need internet access seem to be unable to connect, example EQ2. I re-installed vista thinking maybe it was problem with the install. Same problem... i'm running it stock now, only anti-virus. So, if anyone else has had this problem or any advise I would really appreciate it.
Thanks

Set IE 64 bit as the default browser

Open Internet Explorer 64
Goto Tools>Internet Options>Programs Tab
Click Make Default Browser
Apply

it doesn't give you a choice as to which IE you can use, can't make that version the default... no browse ability either. I also tried to re-assign extentions to IE 64-bit, but no change... i still can't play games... i was able to yesterday. thanks for the help though

i haven't seen this. i've been running Vista x64 for a week. have you tried going into c:\program flies (x86)\internet explorer to manually start the 32-bit version, then set the default per the suggestion above?

Have you tried it with Firefox 32 bit or firefox 64 bit version?

I can browse the net only with the 64-bit version of IE7, and firefox also doesn't work. I'm not able to use sharing programs such as Shareaza and worse is that I can't play EQ2... It just tries to connect to all the servers then says i'm not connected.

that is strange the 64-bit browser works not 32-bit ones. did you manually configure the firewall rules? it almost sounds like IE x64 is the only app with permission to use the internet. at this point, you might want to consider reinstalling or perhaps using System Restore to go back to previous restore points when it was working.

vista x64 has been working great. and with VMWare 6 i'm not missing anything.

Ok, I did a full system restore... and it seemed to fix the problem... i figure shareaza messed it up. Though tonight it seems to have the same problem, i'm going to try to fix it without doing a full system restore, but i'll probably do a full re-install. If it comes to that i'll be making it dual boot with xp. ugh

This is my 1st post here.

I have the same problem as you, in fact I've been involved with a discussion here:

Google Groups - I broke Vista

My 32 bit network support has also broken from 3rd March 2007. Any application that is 32 bit which tries to access the network card instantly crashes. Worryingly this also includes NOD32 because it has a 32 bit update engine.

Neither SkyPE nor Windows Live Messenger will work too, they crash as well.

However, any 64 bit application works as it has before. 32 bit applications run as well unless they try and access the network.

Any clues what has happened?

I dabble in C++, so my plan is to create a small 32 bit application that does some network functionality so that I can see where it's crashing during a debug session.....

I'm guessing its a third party software you have installed that is not compatible with Vista x64,I read some of those posts in your link, what was that guy thinking installing the AMD optimizer?..Vista has native support for dual core processors and installing a AMD dual core optimizer which was designed to fix XP problems with dual core will only make things worst.

I would do a clean install of Vista and install your third party software programs one at a time to see which one may be causing the problem.

I have had the same problems with 2 boxes running NOD32. Uninstalling it got things working again. I didn't really get into trying to mess with NOD to fix the problem I just uninstalled it. If you are running NOD32 can you disable the IMON module and see if things work?

Schwartz, thanks for the input... i'm going to try that tonight. Newegg was having a combo deal with vista ultimate with nod32, and i always wanted a nod32, as opposed to a free antivirus program. I came back to give an update, though... I am regularly getting the problem but if i do a system restore to the most recent point, it seems to fix the problem, of course it begins again a day or so later. I'll try messing with nod32 and post the result.

Well, I booted into safe mode, removed Nod32, rebooted....

SUCCESS!!! My 32 bit apps are now accessing the internet again!

Thanks for that tip.... now what do I do with Nod32?

THANKYOU, had the exact same problem. I wonder what triggered it. Anyone know? and what do i use to replace NOD 32 now? I loved that program :(:(

Did any of you guys who had this problem allow windows to remove some LSP program that was blocking your internet, before you got the problem?

I don't think I removed anything. Thinking back to what I was doing around the time all I can think of is updated my Nvidia graphics drivers on the one box and the chipset drivers on the other. For now I reinstalled nod on both my boxes and disabled imon and everything has been ok to this point.
