my recently assembled computer is now having some weird problems with IE. I'm pretty certain the problem was not always there but i'm not sure since I updated win98 and IE to the latest versions fairly quickly. well, here's the prob: when first starting IE and going to any website, the computer slows way down, and cpu util reaches 100%, even though the computer is pretty much doing nothing. It stays like this for a couple mins and sometimes IE stops responding but sometimes it just starts working fine after that. Netscape never has any problems of the sort. Anyways, I was wondering if there was a way to do a fresh install of IE without uninstalling windows. I looked in the uninstall thing in the control panel but it only lets me uninstall the last patch. or should i just download IE and install it over what i have now?

Go here: http://security.kolla.de/ and download Spybot. SpyBot is a "spyware" scanning program. It will scan for spyware programs that are typically the cause of problems with IE. Run the program and allow it to remove all the programs it highlights in red.

I find Ad-aware 6 here which is free and also excellent for stability,Spybot is ok but I`ve read too many horror stories of reformats and it being buggy to give it my 100% recommendation.

Btw download Anti-troyan 5.5 14 day free trial, this will detect any troyans on your PC that most anti-virus software will miss,I find it a nice backup support program to my anti-virus software.

thanks guys,
i'd used ad-aware, but spybot picked up some things that ad-aware missed and now it seems to be running fine again!

I must say I install Spybot on so many occasions here at the business I work for supporting up to 10000 users. All of which abuse internet completely. I have not had one occasion where of the hundreds of installs I have done have caused one singular problem. With that said, I would use either one, but being that Spybot is in litigation with Ad-aware for illegal usage of the database created by Spybot, I would tend to also favor Spybot... I thank those that create such programs for their help...

ack, i spoke too soon. it was a fluke. the problem is still there. I've run all the anti-spyware programs but to no avail. I'd just stick to netscape, but some things just work better with IE...
