ID's Rage won't support dedicated servers either

This is correct, it started for me in FarCry2's MP. Then FEAR2's lack of dedicated servers files. Now all new games are console oriented .

So I'll stick with Crysis Wars ,UT3,QuakeWars etc. Hopefully a better solution will come, but I'm not holding my breath...

🙁

all they have to do to show how shitty a console FPs is compared to a PC is have them both playing on the same server. even with all the built in aiming cheats to make up for the crappy controls the console boys would be slaughtered.

Far Cry 2 has dedicated servers and a server browser.

I see a lot of people sticking with older FPSs and their mods.

That's what I've been doing.

I can be happy without arena MP as long as we have things like L4D and, hopefully, COOP campaigns starts making a bigger showing ala Borderlands.

As always it is disappointing to see an esteemed developer like id following in this treachery. However they did warn is before hand that Rage would be focused on consoles.

Mods and total conversions have been driving the PC gaming scene for over the last decade. The last commercially released multiplayer PC game which i have purchased and played for any length of time was Red Orchestra released in 2006, which i still play to this day. And of course, it used to be a mod i played for 2 years prior to its release.

The more developers that jump ship to consoles the more the market is opened up to new and interesting exclusive PC games. It could also clear the way for indie devs to get their games recognised on a wider level.

Which brings up the point that many of the best games in the past several years, have been made by mods or conversion of players. Bought up and respun by big companies. If they limit this in the future, we wont have the same games that we would have.

Ya know, in the MW2 thread somebody said that devs are killing multiplayer. I for one applaud them! I cannot WAIT for the return of the single-player story-driven game.

I always said MP was a fad.

Single player games were cool back in the 90's when not many people had a high speed connection but now a good MP is more important than SP and extends the life of a game.

Can anyone enlighten me on WHY these companies are getting rid of dedicated servers? Is it solely because it is cheaper to make the games exactly the same as the console versions?

I can't believe with the backlash IW is getting with COD that other companies are following. I guess they don't think the sales will suffer too much. I think they are probably right, but its still a dick move decreasing the quality in their games

I have no idea but I think control has something to do with it. With no dedicated servers that means no mods, no addons...ect. Now also if they come out with a map pack they can charge the PC users for it where in MW1 and WaW it was free for the PC crowd but the console owners had to pay. Its much easier to port a came over to the PC than it is to develop it for both platforms. There is a reason behind it which we may never know, if you read all the stuff IW has said they claim that they want to make things more user friendly for the PC audience. I don't know about you guys but who the hell has trouble scrolling though a server list?

This is why no one should buy MW2. If the PC version of MW2 does well, then more games will be straight ports without all the normal features expected of a PC game.

If you let them get away with being lazy, it will just get worse.

If they want to kill it, all they have to do is stop making games for it.

This would be overt, they can't do that in the open without risking litigation from various business that depend on PC gaming for revenue.

I've said this before, many times, to many different people. And I've been ignored. In 5 years, if the trend continues, you'll be playing FPSs only on consoles, on a handful of corporate controlled servers, without any developer tools or mod kits. And to rub salt into the wound, when the publisher announces Generic Console FPS XVIII, they'll kill the servers for Generic Console FPS XVII so you can spend money on the new one; which will look identical to the old one except have 3 extra maps, support 2 additional players(one per team), boast two new player skins, a new weapon, and carry a 75 dollar price tag.

There will always be games or mods for the PC. It is an open platform. But yes, gaming is getting worse.

While I have no problem with profit, I'm not buying crap just because consolers do. Hopefully some new companies will spring up to service the PC, but if not, I can live with the existing games and new mods and maps. And when the developers kill that too, screw it. I'm 49, I can live without computer gaming and I'm too old to start twiddling my thumbs.

id has definitely gone to the dark side, but that's okay because they ran out of ideas a long time ago. Now they just recycle the same old crap for consoles and cell phones. Two down, Valve and Monolith and Crytek to go.

Those companies have all gone multi-platform. Valve is doing nothing innovative and are milking their ancient, outdated engine. Monolith gave us a console port of FEAR 2 complete with letterboxing on non 16:9 resolutions. Crytek has said their focus is shifting towards consoles which is evident with CryEngine 3. Basically, we've been abandoned.

This is really a lose-lose situation for PC MW2 players. Buy MW2 and have no dedicated servers, or don't and have no MW3.
