John Carmack Interview

"Visually," Carmack teases, "it's going to be a pretty good step above what we've shown in 'Doom'."

The company's also hoping for a shorter turnaround time than the four-year development cycle of "Doom 3."

"We really, really want to get it done in the next two years," Carmack said.

Oh, and he also said concerning leaving the video game industry completely:

"I wouldn't hazard to look too far ahead," he said. "I'm definitely going to see through this round of rendering work. I wouldn't make any promises beyond that."

Someone hold me! :(

Whats up you Monkeys!

This thread will encompass any and all information about id's next game. At Qcon, Carmack gave his annual technical presentaion and eluded to some information about the next game they will be working on. Instead of appearing live on stage like he normally does, he filmed his talk so it could be played before the audience. In the beginning he apologized profusely, mentioning that his baby "trumps all other concerns," According to a gamespy article, this seemed to get a good "chuckle" from everyone. (For the record, the new baby -- born Friday -- is in great health.)

Anyways, this is what we know so far about the new game:

- id's next title will be a first-person game, and although it will focus on single-player it'll have a basic multiplayer function such as DOOM 3 does.
- It'll focus on single-player, much like DOOM 3.
- id Software's next big game would be a whole new license: not DOOM, not Quake, not Wolfenstein, and no, not even Commander Keen.
- The next game for id Software will be a departure from anything they've done before. (this could be interprited many different ways)
- The company doesn't want to spend another four years on their next title.
- Carmack estimates that he'll have the game engine renderer done in less than a year.
- He also estimated that the art team will be able to start creating media for the new engine within the next month.

Things are moving fast! I'll keep everyone posted.

:p i lost all respect for the id team being able to turn in a well rounded game . . . it looks like 4 years was NOT enough "time" to finish Doom III and they sure rushed the crappy and disappointing ending - with the easiest Boss in any major release

Perhaps this time there will be some "gameplay", "challenge" or even some"AI" - all the things missing from Doom III

i for one will NOT look forward to ANY more id games . . . :(

BTW, was there ANY ai in Doom iii or was it all "scripted"?

Meh. You'll be pre-ordering anything they put out the moment it's announced and be on that like a frat boy at spring break that finds a no-charge bar and bordello.

Then you'll complain about it.

Thank god too. Wouldn't want to be a fanboy of Carmack. He is only one of the most popular game designers ever. I'm glad to see looking forward to next-gen games makes you a fanboy. I'll try my best not to look forward to WoW, don't want to appear to be a Blizzard fanboy. Despite the fact that both companies release such consistant quality that they are held to a higher level of expectations.
