Idler Arms - replace every 2 years???

I have 1997 GMC Safari (same as Chevy Astro) AWD 4.3 L with 128k miles on it.

My favorite auto shop replaced the idler arms in 2005, 2007, and today.

I went and had a chat with those guys just a few minutes ago. They feel that maybe my idler arms are dying so frequently because it's an AWD model. They say that they have not seen this behavior on similar fleets of Chevy Astro's that are 2WD.

Is that a reasonable response? Is there some other deeper problem or design flaw that would make these idler arms wear out so fast? In 2005, they put on GM parts ($). In 2007, they used Napa parts (much cheaper). Today they put the GM parts on it again ($).

*Sigh*. I'm frustrated because why should I pay $215 for a GM part, when it lasted no longer than the $65 Napa part? (answer: I should not ).

I'll be talking to the auto shop guys again tomorrow. The shop manager said he would figure out a way to put an extended warranty on them for me, either through GM or personally. Please let me know if you have any insight for me. Thanks.

(Possibly dumb question) Are you lubing all the fittings? I have a 97 S-10 4.3L, had a 98 S-10 4.3L, and have family with 96 S-10 4.3L, all well over 100K, and never any problems with idler arms. I realize the Safari may have different steering systems, but then again, maybe they don't.

I hit all the zirc fittings while I wait for the oil to drain.
