If I had a dime for every person I see driving around in dense fog without their headlights on I wouldn't have to work.

Driving in dense fog with headlights off is more dangerous than speeding when it's clear.. but do cops ticket anyone around here for not having their headlights on? Of course not...

Seeing and being seen by other drivers is the single most important part of avoiding accidents, yet few seem to care. DRLs are nice, but they don't turn on your taillights, which are important too.

It's not the first time the police have had their priorities screwed up and it surely won't be the last.. just thought I'd share, is all.

Cars still have headlight on/off switches? My car is 10 years old and the headlights are automatic, based on a brightness sensor.

Yes. Automatic headlights are good, but don't work when the driver has the switch on "OFF".

Oh, I've never touched the switch since I got the car, it just switches to daytime lights when it's bright out.

yes many have DRL but you can turn them off

My DRL Lights will not turn off. DRL is always enabled. The only way to turn them off is by cutting wires. I have never turned on my automatic headlights ( 2004 Toyota Matrix ). I have never touched the headlight switch. They come on and off as needed by themselves even when the switch is in the OFF Position.

I do however turn on the fog lights manually when it is foggy. Headlights can also be dangerous in the fog if they are on high beams as more light will reflect back into the drivers eyes. Low beams should be ok.

Lots of new cars don't have automatic headlights. I see plenty of newer cars that do have them, yet the headlights aren't on in foggy conditions.

Headlights create nasty glare in fog.
And not everybody has separate foglights or independent control over them. Thats one of the few nice things about my S-10.

If I got a dime for every time someone says "If I got a dime for xxx....." I would be making money in a very weird way.

at the risk of getting flamed to oblivion, i'd just like to ask if it's the law in your state to have headlights on in the fog because police officers only enforce the law, they don't create it. if it is the law then i agree that they should be ticketing people who disobey.

Yes, it is the law. The fog was so thick this morning I couldn't see two car lengths ahead of me.. much less 500 feet.

"According to state law, motorists must have their headlights on during the period beginning 30 minutes after sunset until 30 minutes before sunrise. Headlights also must be on whenever a driver cannot see a vehicle or person on the roadway at a distance of 500 feet or less."

Yet I saw a couple cops sitting in their usual speed-trap spots... who didn't pull over drivers that didn't have their headlights on.

Yup, yet they sit in speed trap locations pulling over people who go 70mph in a 65-to-55mph freeway-ends area on a clear day in light traffic.
