<< Remember how Netscape broke their own plug-in standard? >>
I've been using Netscape since bersion 1.22N (and before that, Mosaic)...I don't recall this ever being a problem. Remember how Netscape came up with the concept of plug-ins?
<< Remember Netscape's horribly broken DHTML "standard"? >>
I'll give you this one, it was poorly implemented.
edit: Speaking of broken features, what about Microsoft's horribly inconsistent implementation of Java which was so bad that Sun sued them for failing to comply with the standard?
<< Remember Netscape's bug-ridden implementation of tables? >>
In the very old versions of Netscape, it did have difficulty with tables. This is no longer an issue and hasn't been for quite some time.
<< Remember Netscape's hilariously stupid extensions like the annoying BLINK tag? >>
BLINK was a bad idea, and they have even admitted that. MSIE has it's own version of such a stupid extension, MARQUEE.
Edit: speaking of horrible ideas, what about the huge security hole known as activeX?
<< Remember Netscape's unspeakable implementations on other OSes, such as Mac and Unix? >>
Remember how Microsoft wasn't going to develop a platform for other OSes?
Up until MSIE version 4, Netscape Navigator was a better browser, and most people who knew anything about computers agreed with this.
Then, for a while, MSIE and Navigator were about the same, each had its own advantages and disadvantages. However, by this time Netscape was forced to start giving its browser away, because people were opting for MSIE because it was free. Without the revenue previously generated through sales, development came to a screeching halt while they struggled to find a new way to make money (they ultimately decided that they could make money by being a "portal"...unfortunately, revenue from that has been weak at best.)
<< which is why sites still get hits from Netscape 4, despite the fact that it is an old, unpleasant, and virtually unuseable (sic) dinosaur >>
Actually, I still opt to use Netscape 4 at times, because 4.08 standalone is quick and extremely stable. That being said, for my browsing at home I mostly use MSIE, and for my browsing at work I use Mozilla .9.9 - I don't use mozilla at home because it crashes on my computer, but it's rock stable at work.
