Idiot friend just told me desktops are faster than laptops..

Because hardware in laptops are more compressed together

He cites that he has a desktop and a laptop that run around 2.4 ghz with the same amout of memory and everything..and that his desktop is quite a bit faster because his laptop is smaller therefore can't perform as quickly.

I mean come on, laptops are clearly faster because they're smaller and everything has to travel a shorter distance. Right? Of course, that's what I was saying

BigFatCow: if you had everything the same, i think they would turn out to be exactly the same, except maybe the laptop would be a tiny tiny tiny tiny bit fast because of the smaller amount of distance that it has to travel. this would only make a difference in nanoseconds tho

only when the system uses the hard drive.. For example, if I'm playing a video game on identical desktops and laptops (hardware-wise) except the hard drive is slower on the laptop, loading times would be affected, but framerate would not be. Also, even though the hard drive is slower, laptop hard drives usually have more cache ~ 16mb is common. A 4200rpm laptop hard drive with 16mb cache will perform better in quite a few tasks than a 7200rpm desktop hard drive with 2mb cache.

But, saying the system is slower just because the hard drive is slower is somewhat ignorant of what exactly makes a system run fast. Put 1GB ram in a laptop and all of a sudden that 256mb desktop with a faster hard drive crawls and begs for mercy..

The Desktop *should be faster* the architecture is different. Just because they are the same processor speed/ram and maybe hd size doen't mean nothing. One of the things that could slow a laptop down is the fact they are designed with heat as a major factor.

i like the laptop for its lethality. 4-8lbs of solid mass with nice reinforced corners makes for an easy bludgeoning tool. desktops while having a weight advantage are tied down by all those pesky wires.

and btw OP, while i disagree with your friend's logic, it is true the fastest performing computers are desktops. when are they coming out with 90nm a64 laptops?

Yes no doubt about that, but if a laptop and desktop are equivalent in terms of its set up, there's no reason why one should perform any differently than the other.
