Just saw Anands preview.
Wow, gaming on these new Conroe processors owns.

Cant wait to see the first true processor battle come 6 months time.
Perhaps AMD's reign over the market is over, and just like ATI with their 9700 Pro, things now start leveling out?

I don't think it's a matter of wanting to use A64 againts Conroe. AMD and Intel's architectural updates have traditionally been staggered, with Intel coming out with an improved product and AMD answering with a better one some time later. After Conroe launches The A64 should simply be expected to be competitive and keep AMD in the game until they can produce something better.

3 Things:

1) Performance is very impressive. Given 65nm and low power consumption, these babies will overclock like hell. Even today P4 3.0ghz can be pushed to 4.2ghz. That's incredible. Imagine getting a $250 2.13 ghz Conroe and pushing it to 2.8ghz 🙂

2) Isn't intel supposed to move to DDR3 by the end of 2006? I hope DDR2/3 prices are not going to go up and that intel motherboards finally come down to respectable sub-$200 price levels

3) Impressive performance, BUT whats more impressive is increases with SMP enabled patches!! Can we finally start to see good uses of dual processors in games?

 
Wow on those AT gamming benchies. Who would beleive that the X1900XTX could deliver that much more with a CPU core change? I realise that some apps are CPU dependant and these are only benchmarks with-out actuall game AI mixed in, but still very impressive.

Yeah I'm particularly interested in how Merom compares to Conroe, although I think AMD should be most concerned about how Woodcrest will compare to Opteron.
 
these benchmarks are incredible. I didn't expect this much improvement over AMD64 and Pentium4/D. I feel sorry for those who just bought Pentium 6xx, 8xx, and 9xx series. Conroe is a HUGE step forward indeed. I wonder how cheap AMDs are going to be in order to compete. If Conroe also has efficiency advantages, then my next upgrade would most definitely be Conroe unless AMD sells for dirt cheap.

I've been reading all the AT articles, and the benchmarks with Conroe just blow me away. I haven't used Intel in over 6 years, but I'm sold.

Im sold too especially when the 2.67ghz chip is gonna cost only 530 bucks.
Time for amd to slash prices in half.
 
I am still waiting for prices because that will be the deciding factor for me, but it looks great so far.
 
Sorry, that is just what has been done in-house. Not allowed to post setup details or pic. But considering the game demos, the 17s time perfectly possible, wouldn't you say? I have no reason to make stuff up.
 
I said all along they would be back. But I reserve the judgement as to who wins and by how much, for the day you can buy one, and the final benchmarks on both sides are available, and the heat output, and prices are finalized.

Regardless of all that, this certainly looks promising.

Dude, they are 1337 circuit hax0rs. The design team war inside intel is heating up. I doubt CPU prices will drop as a result, but perhaps there'll be higher performing CPU's on the market sooner. This fight is almost as nasty as intel vs amd.

It's not that the benchmarks aren't impressive.....but running 1280x960 on Crossfire?
The difference in games will probably be far less once you turn up the resolution etc.

But the pricing and performance sure sounds good, but I would still think that the major performance bottleneck in games won't be the CPU, but rather GPU and maybe PPU. So I don't think switching from a X2 will be worth it, but if you are in for an upgrade why not choose the best?
