Paraphrasing: Because conservatives have created such a homogeneous group identity (aligned overwhelmingly on religion, race, and other identifiers) they are increasingly vulnerable to open hostility towards any member outside their group. And they are then entrenched deeper into the identity of "conservative" regardless of their actual views on the issues when examined outside of their affiliations.

The horror is both sides are guilty (and the media is complicit) in treating politics like a zero-sum win/lose experience and thus it matters less and less what policies are enacted so long as your team is winning and/or the other team is losing.
