Identifying unknown devices in Vista.

techs

Lifer
For XP I use a little program called Unknown Device finder. It doesn't work for Vista.
I have heard something about going into Device Manager and then using the Details of the unknown device using the drop down box.
Can anyone point me in the direction as to how to do this?
Thanks

Just look at the Hardware ID in device manager for the "Unknown Device", copy and paste it into google and figure it out from there.

Which ones? There are 4 fields in Hardware Id's. And there are many &'s.
Is there a particular string that I should search for?
Here is the hardware Id first line for my video card. Which would I search for:

PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0422&SUBSYS_07401462&REV_A1

Better use pciids.sourceforge.net ... that's the most thoroughly maintained database of PCI IDs. The vendor/device ID identify the chip, and the subsystem ID, if known, identifies the board.
